Sustainable Development is a very complex idea, which makes it is very difficult to understand, even to the Policymakers.
“Sustainable Development is the development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” - Brundtland Commission
Ministries of the Government of India have come up with various schemes from time to time. Not getting into any political debate, if one look closely the policy making has been boomed from 2015.
However, it seems like policymakers have misinterpreted the sustainable development terminology and/or the pressure of making more number of policies had requisite them to make contradictory policies, which shall lead to catastrophe.
For example, consider the case of "Water Resource in India".
India represents 16% of the World Population, accounts for 2.45% of Land Area and Only 4% of Water Resources of the World.
The government had already imposed Regulations on Ground Water Extraction for Industries, on the Other Side government is providing Finacial Assistance for Solar Power Pumps (Free Energy) for Ground Water Extraction for the Agricultural Purpose, for the same region, neglecting the Water Quality and Ground Water Level.
Restricting this article to above-shown Ground Water Usage and it's Geography, Urbanization as well as uneven Rainfall, already decreases the Water Percolation Rate, consequently increases the Total Dissolved Solid (TDS) of Ground Water. Which restricts the usage of same for Agriculture as well as Industrial Purpose.
However, policymakers seem to lean towards Industries by providing ample of Surface Water on the basis of Zero Liquid Discharge System and/or Rain Water Harvesting System, which is of no use because of non-performing treatment systems, inefficient recharge systems, and uneven rainfall.
Moreover, the government is pumping Agricultural Sector to rely on High TDS and Deep Ground Water by rendering Policies of Solar Powered Pumps.
Furthermore, increased pollution levels, as well as usage of high TDS groundwater for irrigation, increases the TDS of recharge water, which further increases the TDS of groundwater, and this Vicious Cycle Continues.
P.S. All the so-called sustainable development is of no use if it is not done for the future generation.
