Water Body Rejuvenation or Deterioration

India has implemented the World Lake Vision, developed by the International Lake Environment Committee (#ilec), #japan, in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (#unep), for the sustainable use of Lakes and Reservoirs in the Bhoj Wetlands, Chilika Lake, Lake Hussainsagar, Powai Lake, Lonar Lake, and Ujjani Reservoir. After more than a decade, nearly all the identified problems of inflow of #sewage and #wastewater, along with immersion of Idols/Tazis, have been constraint sustainability by upgrading capacities of the existing #sewagetreatmentplant, installing new sewage treatment plants, shifting or providing dedicated locations for immersion, and installing #biological fencing. However, the problem of #algae blooms due to the eutrophication of lakes still requires prime focus from the #governmentofindia. The #sustainablesolution to the said problem was to promote #organicfarming. Howeve...

Microplastic Effect

Microplastic Effect Attached Growth Process Attached-growth processes are biological treatment processes used in wastewater treatment and indoor fish farming where the biomass is grown on support media for organic pollutants degradation. Attached-growth processes are easy to operate and resilient to shock loads. However, they are less flexible for process control than the activated-sludge process. The earlier developed media are rock, ceramic, and slag. However, currently, plastic materials are preferred as they are economically mass-produced. With the advantage of the compact design of the attached growth processes, the process becomes a favorable option for the upgradation of the existing wastewater treatment plant. The available technologies for Wastewater and Sewage treatment are Moving Bed Bio-Reactor (MBBR) and Fluidized Aerated Bed (FAB) Reactor. Further, with the advantage of handling high organic loading, the process becomes a favorable option for indoor fish farming. The avai...

Shallow Aquifer - Weakening Foundation

Shallow Aquifer - Weakening Foundation Significant Cracks on Building Structure  During the testing of our newly developed chemical for waterproofing, we observed significant cracks in the basement of the newly constructed buildings in nearly all the metro cities of India. On investigation, we found that these buildings or their neighbouring buildings have incorporated Ground Water Recharge Wells. On further investigation, we found that the said Ground Water Recharge Wells were not been designed by competent personnel. The management has given the contract to the lowest bidder. Note: Ground Water System is very complex and needs an expert to design a sustainable Ground Water Recharge Wells. How are these major basement cracks related to Ground Water Recharge Wells? During the design of the Foundation, we all came up with the terminology Uplift Pressure or Hydrostatic Uplift, defined as an upward pressure applied to a structure that has the potential to raise it relative to its surr...

Rain Water Management

In Continuation of my previous post regarding  Water Management , written a long back, there is still a need for Rain Water Management. Yesterday, one of my team members asked me the question  Why nature is so harsh to us!, is all the current scenario of fash flooding in India is due to Global Warming and Climate Change? I thought for a moment and replied:  Yes, the uneven rain is due to the Climate Change, Global Warming is one of the reasons of the same, however, the flash flooding is due to poor practices and governance in India . He stared at me and asked me  What is Government to do with all, heavy rain and flooding are a natural phenomenon, why you always so skeptical with Government Policies, this time I won't accept your justification? I asked him,  What is the surface area of Surat City? He replied,  Let me search, it's around 327 km2. Immediately I took the calculator, did the calculations and replied,  Ok, the city will generat...

Smart Arrest Procedure - Benefiting Law Enforcement

Considering the current scenario there is a need of Amendment in Police Arrest Procedure. On Arrest of any individual, the maximum number of individual's blood relative should be informed for the happening, through SMS notification, so that they can reach immediately to observe the individual's physical as well as mental condition and the cause of arrest. On Arrest of any individual, the local civil hospital should also be intimated for the happening, so that the Government Doctor can physically examine the individual, in presence of blood relative and/or local guardian, if no blood relative has been visited within an hour of arrest. The Doctor should examine the individual on Arrest, on bringing to Magistrate, on Hearing, and further Proceedings, to compare the individual's physical as well as mental conditions during the custody. On Arrest of any individual, the nearest magistrate having jurisdiction should also be intimated for the happening, to track the whole rec...

True Zero Liquid Discharge

Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD),  a process which is meant to be beneficial to effluent generating organizations, by saving money, as well as "Environment" , as nearly all the generated waste have been reused back. ZLD can be achieved by following means, 1) Thermal Operations 2) Filtration Operations 3) Combinations of Both The main constraint of above-mentioned means are, the both technologies require high CAPEX as well as OPEX. Consequently, water treatment experts were seeking for new innovative means, by which they can achieve ZLD, in most Economical Way. The process, which makes me write this article , one of the most adopted ZLD System, for Reverse Osmosis (RO) Plant Reject, is Spaying Reject into the Atmosphere. The said system looks like this Coming to the point, which your "So-called Water Treatment Experts" didn't tell you, is ZLD simply means, "ZERO LIQUID DISCHARGE".  Spraying high  Total Dissolved S...

Heat Wave in India

Here it Comes..... Comments and suggestions are welcome!!

So called Sustainable Policies Leading to Catastrophe

Sustainable Development is a very complex idea, which makes it is very difficult to understand, even to the Policymakers.   “Sustainable Development is the development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” - Brundtland Commission Ministries of the Government of India have come up with various schemes from time to time. Not getting into any political debate, if one look closely the policy making has been boomed from 2015.  However, it seems like policymakers have misinterpreted the sustainable development terminology and/or the pressure of making more number of policies had requisite them to make contradictory policies, which shall lead to catastrophe. For example, consider the case of "Water Resource in India". India represents 16% of the World Population, accounts for 2.45% of Land Area and Only 4% of Water Resources of the World. The government had alrea...

Denge (Will give) Dengue!!

Past month, dengue was spread in the Ahmedabad, mostly in its west, due to adequate ambient temperature for breeding of Aedes Aegypti, white striped mosquito which spread the dengue and other virus. But, alone, temperature is not the major cause of spreading dengue. The "unseasonal rains" enhances the water accumulation for breeding of the mosquitoes. The water accumulated for more than day or two is adequate for the mosquito breeding, and accumulated water can be found in houses, parks, pubic buildings, "thrown scrap", etc. One should not forget that, Aedes Aegypti bites during the day time. Hence, wearing long-sleeved clothes and burning or spraying the mosquito repellent during the day is advised. But, are you really think, this is the solution of the problem. No, it's not. "We" have to take stand to clean our neighborhood. "We" means, every individual.  For example, recently, one of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's ...

Cold Wave in India!!

The minimum temperature of last three days of Ahmedabad, India was about 15, 14, 10 degree Celsius, respectively. Considering, past temperature trend and meteorological data of the Ahmedabad, drastic variations can be seen. The question arises in my mind, "Why, this sudden change in meteorological conditions??" Also, recent rains in the several parts of north India, which intensify the coldness of the region, amplify my curiosity, to think, "Why, rain is happening in the December??" In my knowledge, answer to the above questions lies in the "Monsoon". Yes, the Monsoon of the India have the answer of this Cold Wave. Let us consider the shown below figure of Monsoon Pattern, taken from Wikipedia . It can be seen in the above shown Monsoon Pattern, "Himalayan Mountain Range" and "Ocean Winds" are the major cause of the Monsoon. Now, considering all the above stated reasons, I am predicting that, the Indian Ocean...

"Odour" can also affect Law Enforcement!!

Yes, "Odour" can also affect Law Enforcement!! Smell perception is not only odour sensation, it is also triggering of experiences and emotions associated with that smell. Research shows that many of our olfactory likes and dislikes are based purely on emotional associations. As, olfactory receptors are directly connected to the limbic system, which is thought to be the seat of emotion. Considering, smell as one of the strongest of the senses which influence brain activity, a bad or foul smell can also trigger bad influence or experience. Two years before, when I came to Ahmedabad, Gujarat, what I saw, in India, is considered as normal practice and negligible stuff. At Maninagar Railway Station, "Police Chowki" (Police Station) and "Peshab Ghar" (Open Urinal) are sharing common wall. It is obvious, one can sense pungent ammoniacal smell of the urine near to the open urinal. Considering, near by, well facilitated new toilet building, it doesn't...

Need of effective Air Pollution Control Measures!!

There is a need of effective Air Pollution Control Measures (APCM) adaptation by Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). This year, Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB), Gandhinagar had conducted Seminar on Odor Control, emphasizing on the consideration of human sensation, i.e. visual and odor, for planing good and effective APCM. Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) had also proposed to Install online Continuous Stack Emission Monitoring Systems (CSEMS) in identified highly polluting industries. However, in the evening, between 18:00 to 19:00 Hours, while crossing Dr. Ambedkar Bridge, one can observe Black Smoke Emission from stacks of the SMEs located at Danilimda, Ahmedabad. Also, one can sense foul odor near Danilimda BRTS Stop, which may be due to Pirana Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), which is one of the biggest STP in Asia. The idea, behind writing this article, is to strictly implement Air Pollution C...

Why Alang is Alag (Discrete)!!

Alang, a town near to Bhavnagar City of Gujarat, India have become one of the major worldwide center for ship breaking. Even, one of the longest ship ever built i.e. "Knock Nevis" was sailed to Alang for demolition. Also, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), on August 7, 2013, proposed to set up six nuclear reactors with a total capacity of 6,600 MW in Mithi Virdi, Gujarat, near to Alang. Now, question arises "Why Alang is Alag". This happened yesterday evening, as I was waiting on bike for more than half an hour to pickup my friend near Iscon Temple, Ahmedabad, couple of Police Officers came to me, and inquired about my motive, which is very good patrolling practice. After my document verification and giving them reason of being there, they asked me "what I do". I told them I am environmental consultant, and I work for environment protection and pollution abatement. Listening to it, they asked me to join them, to ...

What is Consent to Establish and, why it required before establishing new unit?

Consent to Establish (CTE), also known as No Objection Certificate (NOC), is a mandatory legislative requirement for every industry / local body discharging any domestic sewage or tra de effluent into water body or on land and / or caus ing emission of any air pollutant in Air Pollution Control Area (APCA). A ll polluting facilities are legally required to obtain a CTE from respective State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) . The CTE will be granted after an evaluation of the potential environmental impact and design of P ollution C ontrol Measure (PCM) . The conditions for PCM is part of CTE, which should be complied.
